50 Common Phrasal verbs / Daily use English phrasal verbs

 

A phrasal verb is a verb plus a preposition or adverb which creates a meaning different from the original verb.

 

1. Wake up = Jagna/Jagana

Wake up Rohan.

Rohan jago.

Wake the baby up.

Bachche ko jaga do.

Wake your father up.

Apne pita ko jagaao.

Wake me up at 8 tomorrow
morning.

Mujhe kal subah 8 baje jaga
dena.

 

2. Eat out = Baahar khana (To eat at a restaurant)

I ate out yesterday.

Kal maine baahar khana khaya.

I eat out often.

Main aksar baahar khana khati
hoon.

 

3. Eat in = Ghar par khana khana

Let’s eat in today. I’m tired
of eating out.

Chalo aaj ghar par khana khate
hain, main baahar ka khana kha-kha kar pak chuka hoon.

 

4. Call off = Radda karna

You should call the meeting
off because it is going to rain.

Tumhe meeting radda kar deni
chahiye kyonki baarish hone wali hai.

I am calling off the meeting
due to the weather.

Mausam ki vajah se main
meeting radda kar raha hoon.

 

5. Answer back = Palatkar javaab dena (To reply rudely to someone in authority.)

You shouldn’t have answered your father back.

Tumhe apne pita ko palatkar javaab nahi dena chahiye tha.

 

6. Ask about someone = Kisi ke bare me poochhna (Especially professionally and in terms of health.)

He was asking about my father.

Wo mere pita ke bare me poochh raha tha.

 

7. Be away = Kaheen aur hona (Be elsewhere; on holiday, etc..)

Is she away?

Kya wo bahar gayi hui hai?

She is away for three weeks.

Wo 3 hafton ke liye bahar gayi hui hai.

 

8. Be up = Jage hue hona (Be out of bed)

I’m up.

Main jaag rahi hoon.

Are you up?

Kya aap jaag rahe hain?

Is she up?

Kya vah jaag rahi hai?

She is not up yet.

Wo abhi tak jagi nahi hai.

 

9. Big up = Zarurat se jyada badaai karna (Exaggerate the importance)

Rohan bigs himself up all the time.

Rohan har samay apni badaai karta rahta hai.

Don’t big him up.

Uski jyada badaai mat karo.

 

10. Blow down = Hava se kisi cheej ka gir jana

Many trees were blown down in the storm.

Toofaan me bahut sare ped gir gaye.

 

11. Call up = Kisi ko phone karna (To phone)

I called him up yesterday.

Maine kal use phone kiya tha.

Call Rohan up as soon as possible.

Rohan ko jitna jaldi ho sake phone karo.

 

12 Dig in = Jhapat padna (Start eating greedily)

They dug in as the food arrived.

Jaise hi khana aaya ve us par toot pade.

 

13. Get ahead = Unnati karna/Aage badhna (to achieve success)

You need communication skills if you want to get ahead.

Agar aapko unnati karna hai to aapko communication skills aani chahiye.

 

14. Get along = Nikalna (To leave)

It’s late. We must get along.

Der ho rahi hai. Hamen niklna chahiye.

Shall we get along?

Kya ham niklen?

 

15. Count on sb = Kisi par bharosa karna (Rely on smb) 

I count on you.

Main aap par bharosa karti hoon.

You can count on me.

Aap mujh par bharosa kar sakte hain.

 

16. Cross out = Kaat dena (draw a line through)

Cross out your old address and write your new one.

Apna purana wala pata kaatkar naya wala pata likhen.

 

17. Cut back on = Katauti karna (Consume less)

You should cut back on sugar.

Tumhe chini khana kam kar dena chahiye.

My doctor advised me to cut back on sweets.

Mere Doctor ne mujhe salaah diya ki main mithaaiyan khana kam kar doon.

 

18. Do sth up = Baandhna/Band karna

Do your shirt up before you go out.

Baahar jane se pahle apna shirt band kar lena.

 

19. Do sth over = Fir se karna (Do again)

Do the essay over as I didn’t like it.

Essay ko fir se likho kyonki ye mujhe pasand nahi aaya.

 

20. Work out = Vyayam (Exercise)                                        

When do you prefer working out, in the mornings or in the evenings?

Aap vyayam kab karna pasand karte hain, subah me ya sham me?

 

I prefer to work out in the mornings.

Main subah vyayam karna jyada pasand karta hoon.

I prefer to work out in the eve ings.

Main sham ko vyayam karna jyada pasand karta hoon.

 

21. Work out = Safal hona (Be successful)

It was very hard at first but it all worked out in the end.

Shuru me bahut mushkil tha lekin ant me sab safal raha.
